Have you ever wondered what would happen if the long-haired princess of fairytales lived in the heart of India? As part of my university project, I reimagined Rapunzel’s story with a twist – envisioning her as an Indian princess with a unique haircare routine, brought to life through the bold, expressive strokes of Kalighat painting.

Understanding Kalighat’s Bold Strokes

To capture this essence, I delved into the history and techniques of Kalighat painting, famed for its bright colors, striking outlines, and expressive figures. This style, often used to depict Indian deities and folklore, felt perfect for bringing Rapunzel’s story into the Indian context.

Cooking up the Visual Identity

Each flavor had its own unique design element, inspired by the spirit of Ramadan.

For example, flavors like lime and chili incorporated bold, vivid designs to reflect their tangy nature, while more subdued flavors like cream and onion had a soft, elegant touch.

Rough Sketches

An illustrated narrative about…

The Haircare Routine of Indian Rapunzel

Step 1 : Oiling Massage

Rapunzel starts her routine with a deep amla oil massage, while Raja, her loyal chameleon, keeps watch from atop the oil bottle.

Step 2 : Tea & Tresses

As the oil soaks in, she sips on chai with Raja beside her – because good hair needs a little breather too!

Step 3 : Shampoo Session

Settling by a bucket, Rapunzel shampoos her strands while Raja peeks over, observing every soapy splash.

Step 4 : Rinse & Shine

She lets her hair cascade over the tap for a full rinse, with Raja proudly perched above, keeping an eye on the flow.

Step 5 : Towel Time

Rapunzel gently towels off, while Raja waits for her at her feet – quality control is key!

Step 6 : Air Dry!

Finally, she drapes her hair over the courtyard drying line, letting it catch the sun, just like freshly washed clothes – Raja approves!

Final Thoughts

Creating “If Rapunzel Were Indian” allowed me to breathe life into traditional fairytales through the vibrancy of Indian art, and showed the timeless relevance of cultural heritage in modern narratives.
